On March 28th, 2006 HIV/AIDS|ZIMBABWE Charity, INC. (HAZ) adopted The Just Children Foundation, to be it's first pilot Zimbabwean partner organization, and also the beneficiary of the first HAZ Community Based Service Projects. Late in 2005, TJCF initiated a new program under which they take in children given up by HIV positive parents, or whose parents have died as a result of HIV-related illnesses.
Our long-term objective in this pilot project with TJCF is to develop a support system which provides infant formula for orphaned infants in Zimbabwe on an ongoing basis until they reach 12 months of age. After this, pediatricians agree that it is often safe to wean babies from formula to regular milk, and soft foods. We settled upon this project based on the understanding that baby formula is expensive in Zimbabwe, and sometimes it is even impossible to find. Infant formula is an absolute necessity for young infants below 12 months of age, especially so when those infants are not being breastfed or when those infants are infected with the HIV virus. So we believe that this project would make a significant difference to the quality of life of these children, and offer them a chance to develop into healthy childhood, adolescence and adulthood.
